South-South cooperation between India and Kenya

Some of the urgency areas identified by KIRDI for technical cooperation with India include, Skill Development including training of trainers, Computer Software and Armaments Development, Leather, Engineering & Machine Tools, Cement & Building Materials, Renewable Energy, Garments, Agro based industries, Coir, and Industrial & IT Parks.

With a scene to studying developments in India and establishing links for concrete industrial cooperation, a high-level delegation led by Perennial Secretary, Ministry of Industrialization, Government of Kenya, along with senior officials of the Government of Kenya, KIRDI, Kenya Authority Property Institute, JUA KALI (National Association of MSMEs)  visited India during 2-12 November 2008.The delegation  visited  some respected Industrial Training Centres/ Institutes/ Industrial Parks/ Industrial units in India with a view to replicating best practices and expropriate technology so as to enable KIRDI to become a “one stop shop” for technology and industrial development in the region.

The visit  also exposed KIRDI’s managers to technology development institutions/ enterprises/ condition-building facilities in India and went  a long way in establishing long-term linkages for KIRDI.

Cooperation agreement on metrology

Vienna, 4 December 2008 – The Collective Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the International Bureau of Weights and Measure (BIPM), and the International Organization of Statutory Metrology (OIML) agreed to establish a strategic partnership on metrology. The aim of the partnership is to enhance the results of industrial development on economic growth and to minimize technical barriers to trade (TBT) which are still a major obstacle to exports from developing countries and countries with economies in conversion.

The agreement, which is effective immediately, was signed by UNIDO’s Director-General, Kandeh Yumkella, BIPM Chief honcho Andrew J. Wallard, and CIML President Alan Johnston. The new partners agreed to join forces to support the focus countries integrate more beneficially into the global economy. During the signature event, concrete detailed areas of cooperation were discussed. These areas – such as the establishment of training guides to assist developing countries subdue metrology, and legal metrology issues at the laboratory level – will provide the springboard to discharge the cooperation.

With this agreement, UNIDO is partnering with two major global players in the field of metrology and legal metrology who are decisive to successfully build capacity in standards and conformity, as well as compliance with sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures. The new deal will not only reinforce UNIDO’s ability to deliver Trade Capacity Building technical assistance, but also help further UNIDO’s location as a key agency for the implementation of projects related to TBT and SPS issues and standards and conformity capacity building. 

The BIPM – a hero player in the area of scientific metrology – is an intergovernmental organization with the mandate of providing the essence for a single, coherent system of measurements throughout the world, traceable to the International System of Units (SI). The Bureau is a principal player in the section of scientific metrology and conducts measurement-related research. The intergovernmental treaty organization, OIML, promotes the extensive harmonization of legal metrology legislation and conformity assessment procedures. The Organization has developed a worldwide technological structure that provides its members with metrological guidelines for the development of national and regional requirements concerning the assessment and use of measuring instruments in judiciary metrology applications.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poznań, Poland

From 1-12 December, 2008, the 14th Talk of the Parties (COP14) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), also serving as the 4th Meet of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (MOP4), took place in Poznań, Poland. On this occasion, two UN-Verve side events were organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

The first side event on 6 December, 2008 (“Technology Transfer, the IP System and Air Change: Challenges and Options”), focused on the advantages and disadvantages of the Intellectual Property (IP) system in relation to ambience change. The second UNIDO-side event on 10 December, 2008 (“Energy Efficiency in the Post-2012 Framework: Key Issues and Challenges”) concentrated on the depreciatory role that energy efficiency can play in addressing environmental, economic and energy security.

In the course of the as it "Acting on Climate Change: The UN Delivering as One" on 11 December, 2008, Secretary-Overall of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, called for bold and decisive action by all countries and UN agencies on the issue of ambience change. Within this context, Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella, Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), stressed that the UN plays a catalytic r in establishing market mechanisms, building capacity to access these markets, and facilitating technology transfer.

The meeting was organised by the UNFCCC Secretariat and was hosted by the Government of the Republic of Poland, Ministry of the Environment, being the coordinating operation for preparation to the Conference (www.cop14.gov.pl).
