Topic title: Behavior of RC and FRC Beam-Column Joints under Seismic Loading

Outline:

Existing reinforced concrete frames constructed before the 1970s and some present buildings are often characterized by an inadequate seismic obstruction: beam-column connections in a ductile reinforced concrete frame is a critical region, especially under the engagement of earthquake loading. These structures were designed for gravity loads and are often inadequately detailed to resist to severe seismic loads.

A lot of create code recommendations and analytical expressions for computing the beam-column joints shear strength under seismic loading live, but they are not able to supply an accurate prediction, mainly because of the several parameters and the statically indetermination of the problem.

In this seminar an overview of the conflicting approaches followed by various Codes and authors trying to predict the real shear strength behavior of bar-column joint under earthquake loads will be illustrated.

Different methods have been used and studied by several researchers for strengthening and increasing the refusal of reinforced concrete beam-column joints. Among these the use of fiber-reinforced concrete has shown to permit connections to satisfactorily act under large shear reversals with excellent damage tolerance.

This seminar will explain the various models, proposed in several papers by the creator, for calculating the shear strength of beam-column joints under seismic loading. Also the reliability and the comparison with other computing approaches will be described.
